Medical Super Absorbent Polymers™

The MediSAP™ ( Medical Super Absorbent Polymers) are prepared by a unique chemical process of emulsion polymerization whereby the final product is made of tiny spherical particles that — when viewed under an SEM microscope — contain a myriad of channels.

Product Advantages

The MediSAP™ (Medical Super Absorbent Polymers) are prepared by a unique chemical process of emulsion polymerization whereby the final product is made of tiny spherical particles that — when viewed under an SEM microscope — contain a myriad of channels. These channels provide a large particulate void volume and a means by which water and large molecules can be rapidly absorbed.

Two versions of the product are available and differ mainly by the speed of hydration.

Medical SAP™ (MediSAP™) - FAQs

What is Medical SAP™ (MediSAP™) and what makes it different from standard industrial SAP?
Medical SAP™, marketed as MediSAP™, is manufactured through a unique emulsion polymerization process rather than the standard suspension or solution polymerization used for industrial SAPs. This process produces tiny spherical particles that — when examined under a scanning electron microscope — contain a network of internal channels providing a large particulate void volume. These channels enable rapid absorption of high-viscosity fluids including blood and other proteinaceous bodily fluids that challenge standard superabsorbents due to their viscosity and molecular complexity.
MediSAP™ is formulated for the solidification of infectious and regulated medical waste liquids including: blood and blood products, post-surgical bodily fluids, pathological and anatomical fluids, pharmaceutical liquid waste, radiotherapy liquid waste, laboratory research waste streams, and other regulated medical and clinical waste. It is used in hospitals, physician offices, dental practices, veterinary clinics, medical research laboratories, and other healthcare facilities.
Regulations in most jurisdictions require regulated medical waste (RMW) containing free liquids to be solidified before transport and landfill disposal, in order to prevent leakage and contain potential biohazards. Improperly treated liquid medical waste creates serious health risks for healthcare workers, waste handlers, and the public through pathogen transmission, and can result in significant regulatory penalties for the generating facility. MediSAP™ provides a fast, safe, and compliant solidification method at the point of generation.
Yes, this is one of MediSAP™’s key design advantages. Blood and many bodily fluids contain proteins and large molecules that increase viscosity and reduce absorption rates in conventional SAPs. The emulsion-polymerized internal channel structure of MediSAP™ is specifically engineered for these challenging high-viscosity fluids, providing rapid and effective absorption where standard industrial SAPs underperform.
Yes. MediSAP™ is formulated for clinical and healthcare settings. It does not introduce hazardous chemistry into the waste stream, does not react harmfully with medical waste components, and its use does not change the regulated waste classification of the treated material. Safety Data Sheets are available in the Resources section of our website. As with all medical waste handling, appropriate PPE should be used per your facility’s infection control protocol.
Requirements vary by state and jurisdiction. Most states require regulated medical waste containing free liquids to be solidified before transport, and use the EPA Paint Filter Test (Method 9095) as the standard test for free liquid content. MediSAP™, applied at the appropriate rate, enables treated waste to pass this test. M² Polymer Technologies recommends consulting your state’s specific medical waste regulations and working with your licensed medical waste hauler to confirm full compliance for your facility and waste stream.
