Super absorbent polymer applications for low-level radioactive waste stabilization lessen the financial burdens of radioactive waste management. The use of super absorbent materials is most advantageous for “high value” waste streams. These are waste forms where the disposal (landfill) cost per yard or ton of waste is very high and where the expansion of the waste volume quickly becomes cost prohibitive. Low-Level Radioactive Waste (LLRW) is a prime example of a “high value” waste stream. M2 Polymer offers low-level radioactive waste management and disposal solutions with a variety of super absorbent polymer to meet your needs. Ask us about it today!
Economic Advantages of Radioactive Waste Absorbent Polymers
The use of waste solidification polymer, such as Waste Lock® 770, in radioactive waste management is a cost-effective way to stabilize liquid waste. This is achieved without significantly increasing the waste volume or weight. Because these radioactive waste streams are extremely costly to transport and dispose of even a small increase in weight or volume can dramatically increase the cost.
Although these radioactive waste absorbent polymers are significantly more expensive than “cheap” absorbents such as Bentonite clay or Portland cement, project savings are realized by waste minimization.
Depending on the percent water in the waste, most mineral absorbents will double or quadruple the volume of waste… One B25 box or 55-gallon drum then becomes two or even four!
